Exercise…yuck!

People have asked me over the years about our tag line – Live Life Better – and what it means. Well, I recently ran across an article written by Michelle Segar, Ph.D., MPH about the problems with the predominant approach our society has taken to promoting physical activity and fitness to the public. In the article she states, “our mainstream approach turn it (exercise) into a chore instead of the gift it really is…promoting exercise primarily for health and weight-loss has turned exercise into ‘medicine’ and a ‘should’ – maybe even into a punishment.” She goes on to recommend a shift in how individuals perceive and approach exercising.

This got me thinking about how we approach exercise here at O3. While we have always promoted our services as being “tailor-fit” to each person, but it goes much deeper than that. We try to help each person learn new reasons for fitting in fitness, ones relating to enhancing their daily life in some ways. We often find that with this approach exercise becomes something the person wants to do, rather than something they feel they should do. In other words, when a client experiences discernable benefits on an ongoing basis, they will make the time for exercise.

This all points back to our core belief or mantra – Live Life Better. It means that exercise is a robust way to help you feel happier, more energetic and more grounded in daily life.

Dr. Segar goes on to say, “It’s time to stop promoting exercise out of a medical and beauty paradigm and start socializing society that being physically active is one of the most direct paths to achieving high levels of well-being, energy and success. In other words, it’s time to start touting the most compelling benefits of physical activity: as an elixir of life.”

An elixir of life indeed.
